This little dog is one of the most trainable breeds. They are full of character and just love human company. The Toy Poodle is an excellent watchdog despite its size and will warn their owner to any unusual noises or the arrival of strangers. The Toy Poodle is an extremely quick learner and is very easy to train. This breed gets along well with other dogs and household animals if well socialised as a puppy. This breed is recommended for older children as it does not enjoy rough play. The Toy Poodle tends to bark a lot and this should be discouraged from an early age. The Toy Poodle adapts well to any situation and apartment style life is ideal as this breed prefers indoor living. However, they also like to explore the great outdoors. Exercise The Toy Poodle is very playful and not at all lazy. This little dog requires a fair amount of exercise with regular opportunities to run off the lead in a safe and secure location. Grooming The Toy Poodle will require daily brushing with a firm bristle brush. Bathe regularly. The ears need to be checked regularly for infection and hairs growing inside the ear canal must also be removed. Tartar can build up on the teeth therefore they need to be cleaned regularly. Health The Toy Poodle is generally a healthy breed. However, some can be prone to eye disease, epilepsy, dislocated knee caps and diabetes. Life Expectancy 12 – 15 years History The Toy Poodle originated in France and was originally used as a retriever. The Toy Poodle has genetic links with the now extinct French water dog and the Barbet. The word ‘Poodle’ probably comes from the German word ‘pudel’, meaning to play in water. This easily trained breed has been used for many different things including; hunter, circus entertainer and sniffer dog. Today, the Toy Poodle is mainly used as a loving companion and family pet. The breed has been recognised by all major worldwide dog clubs.
