Temperament
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is a friendly, intelligent and obedient dog. This breed is easy to train and an excellent watchdog. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is courageous, loving and good natured. It is important not to treat the Rhodesian Ridgeback too firmly when training so as not to break its spirit. This breed can be aggressive towards same sex dogs. Try to socialise them when they are young to avoid this. The Rhodesian Ridgeback can be destructive if left alone for long periods of time but makes a wonderful companion if exercised and trained enough.

Exercise
The Rhodesian Ridgeback requires regular vigorous exercise. A twice daily walk/run for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. This breed has endless stamina and loves to swim.  

Grooming
A regular groom with a firm bristle brush is recommended. Only bathe when necessary.

Health
The Rhodesian Ridgeback is generally of very good health but some can be prone to hip dysplasia.

10 – 12 years

History
The Rhodesian Ridgeback originated in Zimbabwe and was once called the African Lion Hound as they were used to hunt lions in the late 1870’s. The breed was developed by crossing ridge backed dogs kept by native South African tribes and other breeds like the Khoikhoi dog, Deerhound and Mastiff. The Rhodesian Ridgeback was used for many purposes including; hunting game, retrieving and guarding. The Rhodesian Ridgeback is well adapted to the African climate. They can withstand very high temperatures during the days and the damp cold of night.
