It is thought that they were created by crossing the Foxhound, the Bloodhound, the Greyhound, the Newfoundland, the Irish Setter and the Bulldog. The Pointer gets its name from the motionless pose the breed holds once he has sniffed out game. The direction of the dogs point tells his master where the game is hiding. Today, the Pointer is mainly used as a family and hunting companion. They are recognised throughout the world by all major dog clubs.
