This loyal dog makes an excellent watch dog for its size. Due to their independent nature, the Pekingese may be difficult to house train. They can be wary of strangers and may become reserved towards children and some adults. The Pekingese adapts well to most situations and fits in with the family routine. The breed is ideal for apartment style living and makes a great companion. Exercise The Pekingese do not like taking regular walks however, they will have all round better fitness if taken on regular walks.
Grooming The Pekingese has a very long double coat and therefore will require daily brushing with a firm bristle brush. Health The Pekingese can be prone to breathing, eye and ulcer problems. This breed often has difficulty when giving birth and a veterinary professional should be present during this time. Life Expectancy 10 – 15 years History The Pekingese originated in China where the smallest specimens are carried around in the sleeves of emperors and other royalty. This dog was so sacred in China that the commoners had to bow to them. Anyone who stole a Pekingese was sentenced to death. When emperors died their Pekingese pet was sacrificed so that they could give him protection in the afterlife. The breed was first shown in the early 1890’s in Britain and is recognised by all major clubs. The Pekingese is one of the breeds most closely related to the ancestral wolf. (Others are the Shar-Pei, Lhasa Apso, Basenji, Samoyed, Siberian Husky, Chow Chow, Alaskan Malamute, Shih Tzu, Akita and Afghan Hound)
