This cheery little dog makes an excellent watchdog. If trained properly, the breed is well balanced, sweet natured and very affectionate. The Patterdale Terrier gets along excellently with children of all ages. The breed must be given a lot of human company and cannot be left for long periods of time or they may become destructive. Patterdale Terrier Puppies tend to chew a lot. It is recommended to leave lots of toys and chews around to help save your furniture. Patterdale Terrier’s are instinctive hunters and should not be left with small fleeing animals such as: hamsters, guinea pigs, rats or rabbits. This breed is not suitable for elderly people as they can be quite boisterous. Exercise The Patterdale Terrier requires plenty of exercise. A twice daily walk for around 40 – 60 minutes is recommended. Always keep this breed on the lead in public places and only allow them to run free in a secure location. Grooming Regularly groom the Patterdale Terrier with a firm bristle brush. Health The Patterdale Terrier is generally of very good health but can be prone to eye problems and skin allergies. Life Expectancy 10 – 12 years History The Patterdale Terrier originated in Cumbria, England. Over the years, they have been used as a ratter and fox hunter. The breed is virtually unknown outside England. In fact, they are most commonly found in the Lake District and in Yorkshire. The Patterdale got their named after a village in Cumbria where the breed is popular. Today, the Patterdale Terrier is primarily used as a family and hunting companion.
