This animated little dog has a very perky nature and tends to become very attached to their owners. In fact, they will often follow you everywhere. The Papillon is not a good watchdog. However, they will warn their owner to any unusual noises or the arrival of strangers. The Papillon can be trustworthy around children but does not enjoy rough pay. Although the breed loves to be affectionate and cuddle with their owner, they also love to explore the outdoors so a garden is preferred. Exercise The Papillon is a playful little dog and although they are small they still love to go for a good run. Like most dogs they love an exercise routine. Only let the Papillon run off the lead in a safe and secure location. This breed is small enough to fit through fences that might appear to be secure. Grooming The Papillon will require daily brushing with a firm bristle brush. This breed is generally odourless and very clean so bathing is mostly unnecessary. However, it would not hurt to bathe or dry shampoo this breed when appropriate. The Papillon tends to accumulate tartar so keeping the teeth clean is recommended. Health The Papillon is generally a very healthy breed. However, some can be prone to eye and knee problems. Life Expectancy 12 – 16 years History The Papillon originated in France and with a recorded history going back nearly 720 years, they are one of the oldest toy breeds in the world. This breed was originally known as the dwarf spaniel. The Papillon is seen in many paintings and sculptures found in the renaissance period. Despite its small size, this breed has been used to flush out birds and small game on hunts. The Papillon was cherished among the European noble men and is still famed today for its great companionship.
