Temperament
The Newfoundland is a very loyal, intelligent and gentle dog. This breed is a good guard dog and can adapt well to urban living. The Newfoundland is a true gentle giant. They are elegant but extremely strong. This protective breed tends to place himself between the intruder and his family rather than growling or showing aggression. However, the Newfoundland will generally act if the family is threatened. Some males may be aggressive towards other male dogs and should be socialised as puppies to avoid this. The breed loves to swim and has webbing between the toes to help it when in the water. The Newfoundland is an outstanding water rescue dog. It has been called the St. Bernard of the water and has been used in hundreds of water rescues and saved many human lives.

Exercise
The Newfoundland will require regular exercise. A daily walk or run for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. They have a tendency to become lazy, so a regular exercise routine is required.

Grooming
A daily groom with a firm brush is recommended. The Newfoundland is a relatively high maintenance breed.

Health
The Newfoundland can be prone to heart problems and hip dysplasia. This breed is not suited to hot climates due to their thick double coats.
