Life Expectancy 8 – 10 years History The Neapolitan Mastiff originated in Italy many centuries ago. The breed has been used as an arena gladiator by the Romans, in the bloody sport of bull, bear and dog fighting, and as a bodyguard. The word "Mastiff" derives from the Latin word “massivus”, meaning massive. The Neapolitan Mastiff was originally bred to be a dog of war. History shows Neapolitan Mastiffs being used to hunt lions, fight bulls, and even to bring down elephants. In later years, the Neapolitan Mastiff was bred less to attack and more as a guardian and pet. Today, this powerful breed is used mainly as a family companion and guard dog. They have been used by the Italian police and military to protect people and property. This breed is relatively rare outside of Europe.
