This dog is one of the most trainable breeds. They are full of character and just love human company. The Miniature Poodle is an excellent watchdog and will warn their owner to any unusual noises or the arrival of strangers. The Miniature Poodle is an extremely quick learner and is very easy to train. This breed gets along well with other dogs and household animals but can be reserved towards strangers. It is advised to socialise the Miniature Poodle as a puppy. The breed is recommended for older children as it does not enjoy rough play. They tend to bark a lot and this should be discouraged from an early age. Exercise The Miniature Poodle is very playful and requires a daily walk. Despite the size, Miniature Poodles need a fair amount of exercise with regular opportunities to run off the lead in a safe and secure location. Grooming The Miniature Poodle will require daily brushing with a firm bristle brush. They should be bathed regularly and the ears need to be checked regularly for mites and infection. Hairs growing inside the ear canal must also be removed. Tartar can build up on the teeth therefore they need to be cleaned regularly. Health The Miniature Poodle is generally a healthy and long lived breed. However, some can be prone to eye disease, blindness, diabetes and heart disease. Life Expectancy 12 – 15 years History The Miniature Poodle originated in France and was originally used as a retriever. The Miniature Poodle has genetic links with the now extinct French water dog and the Barbet. The word ‘Poodle’ probably comes from the German word ‘pudel’, meaning to play in water. . This easily trained breed has been used for many different things including; hunter, circus entertainer and sniffer dog. Today, the Miniature Poodle is mainly used as a loving companion and family pet. The breed has been recognised by all major worldwide dog clubs.
