History
The Old English Mastiff originated in England many centuries ago. The breed has been used as an arena gladiator by the Romans, in the bloody sport of bull, bear and dog fighting and as bodyguard and companion. The Mastiff was originally bred to be a dog of war. History shows Mastiffs being used to hunt lions and even bring down elephants. Thousands of Mastiffs were known to be sent on the front line of major battles because they could be ferocious fighters. In later years, the Mastiff was bred less to attack and more as a guardian and pet. From the 1950’s the English Mastiff breed grew and was established as a popular pet and show dog renowned for its huge size and sociable, loving nature.
