This well balanced breed has unlimited endurance and agility. They tend to be very well behaved when indoors, but are far happier when they have plenty of work to do outside. The German Large Munsterlander is relatively easy to train but will require a strong and confident owner. They love human company and need to be a part of the family’s day to day activities. Isolation will lead to destructive behaviour. Exercise Large Munsterlander require regular vigorous exercise. A twice daily walk/run/swim for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. Grooming A weekly groom with a soft brush is recommended for the Large Munsterlander. Health The Large Munsterlander is generally of good health but can be prone to some ear problems. Also hip dysplasia and skin cancers can be a problem with this breed. Life Expectancy 10 – 12 years History The Large Munsterlander originated in Munster, Germany in the 1800’s. The breed is also known as the Grosser Munsterlander Vorstehhund. They are thought to have genetic links with the German pointer and was once known simply as the black and white Longhaired Pointer. The Large Munsterlander was, and still is, used as an excellent hunter and retriever by German hunters. This breed remains very popular in native Germany and is now becoming popular in both England and Canada. The breed is recognised by most worldwide dog clubs.
