This charming breed is easily trained and enjoys pleasing their owners. They seem to shine in obedience competitions so this type of training is interesting and fun for both owner and dog. The Labrador Retriever is friendly towards other dogs and family pets, they love to be around people and if isolated, or left alone for long periods of time, they can become destructive. Exercise Labrador Retrievers require regular physical exercise. A daily walk/run/swim for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. Labrador Retrievers just love to swim and should be allowed to do so whenever possible. Grooming Medium maintenance is required. A weekly groom with a soft brush is sufficient.
Health Labrador retrievers are generally of good health but can be prone to some eye problems. Also hip and elbow dysplasia can be a problem with this breed. Life Expectancy 10 – 12 years History Labrador retrievers are one of the most popular breeds in the UK. They Originated in Newfoundland, Canada and were once known as St John’s dogs. They were a big part of every fishing crew and were trained to leap overboard into the icy cold waters to drag fishermen's nets onto the shore. The Labrador's excellent retrieving instincts were further developed in England in the 1800’s when English ships coming from Labrador brought dogs of this breed type to the UK.
