General Description: Sturdy strong body with a thick, flat coat Height: 53 - 58cm Weight: 20 - 30kg Colour: Liver, solid brown Retriever group Temperament The Irish Water Spaniel is an alert, friendly and loyal companion. This very quick learner just loves human company and is an excellent watch dog. They love water and may constantly get themselves wet and dirty. They are good with other dogs and family pets, except birds (for obvious reasons). The breed can have a mind of its own, but generally is easy-going and gentle. They should be well-socialised as puppies to avoid behaviour problems in adult life. The Irish Water Spaniel is generally a quiet dog and will bark only when necessary to warn their owners. They can snore and drool a bit and can become destructive if left alone for long periods of time. Exercise Irish Water Spaniels have boundless energy and require regular physical exercise. A twice daily walk for around 30 – 40 minutes is sufficient. Most of this dogs exercise should be off the lead. The Irish Water Spaniel has great stamina and can work in all kinds of weather and on difficult terrain for hours without tiring. Grooming Medium maintenance is required. Check ears regularly for signs of infection.
Health Irish Water Spaniels are generally of good health but can be prone to ear infections, eye problems and hypo-thyroids. Also elbow and hip dysplasia can be a problem with this breed. Life Expectancy 10 – 12 years History The Irish Water Spaniel Originated in Ireland in the 1830’s. It is thought the breed probably has genetic links with the Poodle, Irish Setter, Flat Coated Retriever, Portuguese Water Dog and the Barbet. The Irish Water Spaniel gained a reputation in England and Ireland for their ability to retrieve from freezing waters. They are the largest of all the Spaniels and are now considered a rare breed. The Irish Water Spaniel is recognised throughout the world by all major dog clubs and is mainly used today as a hunting dog, family companion and show/agility dog.
