General Description: Lean and muscular breed with a short, close coat Height: 51 - 66cm Weight: 18 - 27kg Colour: Rusty gold or sandy yellow Retriever group Temperament The Hungarian Vizsla is a friendly, intelligent and obedient dog. This agile breed was not known at all outside Hungary until after the Second World War. Although a wonderful family pet and gun dog, this breed can be sensitive and requires gentle handling. The Hungarian Vizsla adapts well to urban living but more rural destinations are preferred for this playful breed. If bored, Vizslas can become destructive. Exercise Hungarian Vizslas require regular exercise. A twice daily walk/run/swim for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. Grooming A weekly groom with a firm brush is recommended. Hungarian Vizlas are generally a low maintenance breed. Health Hungarian Vizlas are generally of very good health but some can be prone to hip dysplasia and eye diseases. Life Expectancy 12 – 15 years History The Vizsla is a hunting dog that originated in Hungary. It is thought to be linked to two ancient breeds; the Transylvanian hound, and the Turkish yellow dog. However, it is more likely that the breed has genetic links with the Weimaraner. This breed is also referred to as the Hungarian Pointer. The Hungarian Vizsla is an excellent swimmer and would have been used to retrieve from marshes and lakes as well as woodland and plains.
