Temperament
The Golden Retriever is an active, friendly and loyal companion.  This charming breed is easily trained and is very patient and gentle. Golden Retrievers enjoy pleasing their owners, so obedience training can be very interesting and fun for both owner and dog. This breed seems to shine in obedience competitions. Although Golden Retrievers are unlikely to attack they do make excellent watchdogs and will signal owners loudly if a stranger was to approach. Golden Retrievers are friendly towards other dogs and family pets. They love to be around people and if isolated, or left alone for long periods of time, the Golden Retriever can become destructive.

Exercise
Golden Retrievers require regular physical exercise. A daily walk for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. Golden Retrievers love to swim and should be allowed to do so whenever possible.

Grooming
Medium maintenance is required. A weekly groom with a soft brush is sufficient.

Health
Golden Retrievers are generally of good health but can be prone to skin allergies, skin problems and some eye problems. Also hip dysplasia can be a problem with this breed.

Life Expectancy
10 – 12 years

History
The Golden Retriever's origin is difficult to prove. They are believed to have been developed in the UK during the mid 1800’s. However they have some similar characteristics to the Bloodhound and Irish Water Spaniel. This makes Golden Retrievers very able gun dogs and they are renowned for their tracking abilities. Nowadays this breed is used as a guide dog for the blind.
