General Description: Lean and muscular breed with a harsh, wiry coat Height: 55 - 69cm Weight: 20 - 29kg Colour: Liver and white, liver roan or black and white Retriever group Temperament The German Wirehaired Pointer is an aristocratic, affectionate and loyal companion. This well balanced breed has unlimited endurance and agility. They tend to be very well behaved when indoors, but are far happier when they have plenty of work to do outside. The German Wirehaired Pointer is relatively easy to train but will require a strong and confident owner. This breed loves human company and needs to be a part of the family’s day to day activities. Isolation will lead to destructive behaviour. German Wirehaired Pointers have an enthusiastic expression and usually do not show any signs of nervousness. Exercise German Wirehaired Pointers require regular vigorous exercise. A twice daily walk/run/swim for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. Grooming A weekly groom with a soft brush is recommended. Health The German Wirehaired Pointer is generally of good health but can be prone to some ear problems. Also hip dysplasia and skin cancers can be a problem with this breed. Life Expectancy 10 – 12 years History German Wirehaired Pointers originated where their name suggests. Sources differ on the exact genetics of this breed type, although, the Bloodhound, Poodle-Pointer mixes and Foxhound are thought to be possible contributors. This breed has been slow to gain recognition outside of Germany, but has lately grown in popularity due to its ability to both point and retrieve either in water or on land.
