General Description: Sturdy, firm bodied dog. Comes with smooth or wiry coat Height: 33 - 41cm Weight: 5 - 9kg Colour: White with tan or black and tan Terrier group Temperament The Fox Terrier is a very loyal, independent and alert breed. This keen little dog is charming, obedient and extremely loyal. The Fox Terrier makes a good watchdog; they can be protective of the home and family. They get along excellently with children of all ages and just love to please. Although they are easy to train they will need firm handling from an early age. Fox Terriers tend to be feisty with other dogs and can become aggressive towards them. The breed is an instinctive hunter and should not be left with small fleeing animals such as: hamsters, guinea pigs, rats or rabbits. The Fox Terrier is not suitable for elderly people as they can be quite boisterous. They like to dig and should only be allowed to run free in a secure and fenced location. Exercise The Fox Terrier requires a reasonable amount of exercise. They will be able to exercise themselves if given access to a garden or other secure area. A daily walk for around 20 – 40 minutes is recommended. Grooming A regular groom with a firm bristle brush is recommended. The Fox Terrier comes in two types; the Smooth or the Wirehair. Both coat types will require a weekly groom to keep them in good shape. Extra care should be given to the more popular Wirehair as the coat can become matted if not groomed correctly. Health The Fox Terrier is generally of very good health but can be prone to skin allergies and some genetic eye diseases. Life Expectancy 13 – 16 years History The two types of Fox Terrier, Smooth and Wirehair, appear to be practically identical except for the coat type. However, they have quite different origins. The Smooth is thought to have been developed by crosses of the Old English Terrier, smooth coated Black and Tan Terriers, Bull Terriers, Greyhounds and Beagles. They were used by hunters along with the foxhound to locate foxes when they went to ground. The Wirehair Fox Terrier was created in England by fox hunters and are believed have blood lines with the now-extinct rough-coated Terrier and Working Terriers of Wales.
