General Description: Elegant dog with a flat, straight coat Height: 61 – 69cm Weight: 25 - 30kg Colour: Black and tan, white flecked with liver, lemon or black sleek Retriever group Temperament The English Setter is a gentle, friendly and loyal companion. They enjoy pleasing their owners, so obedience training can be interesting and fun for both owner and dog. Although English Setters are unlikely to attack they do make excellent watchdogs and will signal owners loudly if a stranger was to approach. This breed is friendly towards other dogs and family pets. They love to be around people and if isolated, or left alone for long periods of time, the English Setter can become destructive. Exercise English Setters require regular physical exercise. A twice daily walk for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. Grooming The English Setter requires a daily groom with a firm brush. Health The English Setter is generally of good health but can be prone to some eye problems. Also hip dysplasia and bloat can be a problem with this breed. Life Expectancy 10 - 12 years History The English Setter originated in England in the mid 1800’s. It is thought that this breed has genetic links with the Springer Spaniel, Irish Water Spaniel and the Pointer. The English Setter was once known as the Laverack Setter, after Edward Laverick; who played a major role in the breeds development. The word "setter" comes from the almost sitting position the breed exhibits when they have discovered game whilst hunting.
