This breed is very intelligent and extremely eager to please their owner. The Doberman is energetic and has immense strength and endurance. They will bond very closely with the family and can be very protective towards them. The breed can sometimes become a one-person dog. Owners need to be firm and consistent from a young age when training. This breed should be socialised early with other dogs and strangers to avoid trouble in adult life. New / inexperienced dog owners should avoid this breed as the Doberman can be hard work in the wrong hands. This breed has been known to perform well as a police and military dog, guard dog, and as a wonderful family pet. They were originally bred to be an outstanding guard/watchdog. Exercise The Doberman will require regular vigorous exercise. A twice daily walk or run for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. To be allowed to run off the lead in a safe area in preferred. Grooming A regular groom with a firm brush is recommended. The Doberman is a relatively low maintenance breed.
Health The Doberman is can be prone to heart problems, eye problems and hip dysplasia. This breed can get cold and should be not exposed to extreme cold. Life Expectancy 10 – 13 years History The Doberman originated in Germany in the late 1900’s. It is thought that many breeds were used to create the Doberman, including: the Great Dane for their size and strength, the Greyhound for their speed and agility. Also the Schnauzer, German Shepherd, German Shorthaired Pointer, Rottweiler Manchester Terrier and Weimaraner are also thought to have contributed to this wonderful breed. Louis Dobermann (the breed’s creator) worked as a dog catcher and tax collector and needed the ultimate protection dog to accompany him on his rounds through tough areas. After the Second World War the breed became well known in England and the Doberman club was formed in the late 1900’s.
