General Description: Long bodied breed with short limbs Height: 19 - 22cm Weight: 8 - 10kg Hound group Temperament The Dachshund (pronounced dak sund) is an aristocratic, brave and loyal companion. This affectionate little breed is proud, bold, and affectionate but can be aggressive towards strangers. Dachshunds are wonderful house pets, are quite easily trained and great company. This breed likes to bark and they are surprisingly loud for their size. They have a natural digging instinct. Exercise The Dachshund requires regular exercise, which is surprising for their small stature. A daily walk for around 20 – 50 minutes is sufficient. Do not over feed this breed as they are prone to obesity. Grooming A weekly groom of the Dachshund with a bristle brush is recommended. Health The Dachshund is generally of good health but can be prone to spine trouble. Skin problems can also be an issue with this breed. Life Expectancy 12 – 15 years History The Dachshund originated in Germany hundreds of years ago. They were developed to hunt and track badgers, hare and stoat. Over many years this breed evolved with shortened legs to dig the prey out and go down inside the burrows. "Dachs" is the German word for badger. Dachshunds have many Terrier characteristics. They are brave and protective dogs and have been known to confront larger animals like foxes and otters. Today, the Dachshund is very popular within the show ring and as a family pet.
