Temperament
The Collie is an independent, energetic and well balanced breed. This playful dog loves human company and has great stamina and endurance. The Collie can be reserved towards strangers but will get along with other dogs and animals if socialised well as a puppy. The Collie is an intelligent breed and can become bored easily which leads to bad habits. They are good watch dogs and will alert their owner of any intruders. They are naturally a working dog and are capable of commanding sheep and large animals on farms.  The Collie can be a very noisy barker; this should be discouraged in all Collie puppies from an early age.

Exercise
The Collie requires vigorous exercise. A twice daily walk/run/swim for around 40 - 60 minutes is sufficient. This breed also loves to run free off the lead but should only be allowed to do so in a secure location. Lack of exercise will lead the Collie to destructive behaviour.

Grooming
A weekly groom of the Collie with a firm bristle brush is recommended. Only bathe this breed when necessary as they are naturally very clean dogs.

Health
The Collie can be prone to epilepsy, hip dysplasia, eye problems and some skin infections and allergies.

Life Expectancy
14 – 16 years

History
The Collie originated in Scotland. They were used as a working sheep dog in the Scottish lowlands where its magnificent coat provided excellent protection from the elements. The name Collie comes from the term used for the local black sheep ‘Colleys’. There are two Collie types, the rough Collie and the less common smooth Collie. These two dogs are identical in character and description. The only difference between the two dogs is the different types of coat. Today the Collie is mainly used as a companion and show dog. The breed is recognised by all major dog groups throughout the world and is now one of the world's most popular breeds.
