They can be bossy and protective and often become a one person dog. The Chow Chow can be a challenge to train, therefore a firm and patient owner is required. This breed has a reputation for ferocity and can be an aggressive fighter if provoked. The Chow Chow is a very good watch dog and owners should be careful when strangers are around. This breed adapts very well to urban style living but requires space to exercise. They must be socialised heavily as puppies, this should combat over protectiveness as an adult. A well socialised and trained Chow Chow makes an excellent family pet. It has been said that the short haired Chow Chow learns faster than its long haired cousin. Exercise The Chow Chow can be lazy and only needs a reasonable amount of exercise. A daily walk for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient enough to keep them fit. Grooming A regular groom with a firm bristle brush is recommended. Only dry shampoo when necessary. Health The Chow Chow can have problems with hip and elbow dysplasia and can be prone to eye problems. Life Expectancy 12 – 15 years History The Chow Chow originated in China and was used for guiding and pulling carts. It was once eaten in China and its fur was sort after. The flesh of the Chow Chow was considered a delicacy and dog is still eaten in China to this day. This breed’s bone structure is similar to that of the oldest known fossilised dog remains. The Chow Chow became the favoured hunting dog of Chinese emperors and one emperor is said to have kept over one thousand Chow Chow pairs. The Chow Chow was almost unknown throughout the Western world until about 130 years ago. The Chow Chow is one of the breeds most closely related to the ancestral wolf.
