Temperament
The Chihuahua is a very alert, playful and affectionate breed. This loyal dog becomes very attached to its owner and can even become jealous over other family members and pets. The Chihuahua can become so attached to their owner that they even like to lick their faces. Chihuahua's can snap at people, including children, if they are not brought up without proper human leadership. The breed is easy to train but must be socialised enough as a puppy to insure non aggressive behaviour as an adult. The Chihuahua makes a poor watchdog.

Exercise
The Chihuahua requires a regular walk to alleviate boredom. However, they are very active and generally exercise themselves. Although it is tempting to carry this breed everywhere, they will be a lot fitter if taken on walks.

Grooming
The smooth and short hair variety only require a regular groom with a soft bristle brush. However the long haired variety needs daily brushing with a soft bristle brush.

Health
The Chihuahua is generally a healthy breed, however, they can be prone to eye and heart problems, as well as dislocating knee-caps.

Life Expectancy
12 – 15 years

History
The Chihuahua (pronounced Chu-wah-wah) was discovered in Mexico around 120 years ago. It is thought that the breed dates back to at least the 9th Century and is one of the oldest breeds on the American continent. The breed is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The Chihuahua is the smallest dog breed in the world and was once sacred to the pre-Columbian Indian nations.
