General Description: Sleek, muscular dog with a short dense coat and a bushy tail Height: 48 – 60 cm Weight: 15 - 25 kg Colour: Black, brown, and white, or patched with white, black or brown Herding group Temperament The Canaan Dog is an affectionate and very loyal breed. They are suspicious of anyone or anything they do not know. Because of this wariness of strangers they should be well socialised as puppies. If socialised from a young age and with a lot of exposure to different situations, the Canaan dog tends to be far less suspicious and able to cope with strange situations much better. The breed is usually highly territorial and can be aggressive towards other dogs of the same sex. The Canaan dog loves human company and will quickly become attached to their family. Exercise The Canaan Dog will require a lot of exercise. They will benefit from a daily walk/run and will need both mental and physical stimulation. Only let the Canaan dog run off the lead in a safe and secure location. Grooming The Canaan dog will only require a regular brush with a firm bristle comb. They are extremely clean and rarely require bathing. In fact they are practically odourless. Health The Canaan dog is generally a healthy breed and does not have any particular conditions for which they are prone. Life Expectancy 12 – 15 years History The Canaan Dog originated in Israel in the 1930's. Drawings of Canaan dogs were found in tombs dated back as far as 2200 BC. It is thought the breed has genetic links with the wild dogs of Israel and they are still used today to guard and herd sheep in their native country. Over the years this hardy breed has been used for many different tasks including: a war messenger, a search and rescue dog and even as a guide for the blind. Although the Canaan dog is relatively rare, they have been recognised by most major worldwide dog clubs.
