This playful dog is always ready to receive affection or fool around with their owners. They can be chasers and should not be left off their lead in any unsecured areas. Cairn Terriers are very intelligent and can be trained easily. They are great watchdogs and will alert their master by growling and standing firmly towards any approaching stranger. Cairns like to dig and search for vermin, so it is not wise to leave them unsupervised in your beautifully landscaped garden. Exercise The Cairn Terrier will get most of the exercise required by running around the garden. However a daily walk for around 20 – 40 minutes is recommended. Grooming A regular groom with a firm bristle brush is recommended. The Cairn Terriers coat can become a bit of a matted mess if not groomed regularly enough. Bathe around once a month. Health The Cairn Terrier is generally of very good health but can be prone to skin allergy and can also suffer from dislocating kneecaps and eye problems. Life Expectancy 12 – 14 years History The Cairn Terrier is one of Scotland’s original Terriers and is thought to have been a contributor towards today’s Scottish Terrier, West Highland Terrier and Skye Terrier breeds. In England no dog has advanced more rapidly than the Cairn and they are now one of the most popular of all Terriers in the UK. The Cairn Terrier was used in the Scottish Highlands to rid vermin from the piles of small stones called cairns (common around Scottish farm borders and graves). The Cairn Terrier continued its role as an unnamed and untitled working dog into the 20th century - it was finally given the name ‘Cairn Terrier’ in 1912. This lovable breed has also been used in therapy Programs, giving much love and affection to people in care homes.
