Temperament
The Bullmastiff is a very loyal, gentle and placid dog. They have a very pleasant nature, athough at times they can be quite wilful. They can be very shy around strangers and are very tolerant of children. The Bullmastiff is more aggressive than the Old English Mastiff and it is advised to socialise the breed when puppies to deter any aggression shown towards other dogs. The Bullmastiff is a loyal and alert watch dog, they are also very passive - unless provoked. Although they are unlikely to attack, they will catch an intruder, take him down and hold him until his master returns. These dogs love human attention and will need a strong and consistent owner. They should be obedience trained and should be taught not to pull on the lead as a puppy.

Exercise
The Bullmastiff will require regular moderate exercise. A daily walk or run for around 30 – 50 minutes is sufficient. To be allowed to explore off the lead in a safe area is preferred. Never exercise this breed directly after eating as they are prone to bloat.

Grooming
A regular groom with a firm brush is recommended. The Bullmastiff is a relatively low maintenance breed.

Health

The Bullmastiff can be prone to bloat, eye problems and hip dysplasia.

Life Expectancy
8 – 10 years

History
The Bullmastiff originated in England and is thought to be made up of 60% English Mastiff and 40% Bulldog. The Bullmastiff was originally called the 'Gamekeeper’s Night Dog' because they were used to catch poachers. The dogs were not so much violent, but intimidating. They were trained not to bite, but restrain the intruder and wait for their owner to arrive. The Mastiff Bulldog can be found in records in the late 1700’s. The British Kennel Club first recognised the breed in 1925. These dogs have been used for hunting, guarding and by the police and military. Bullmastiffs have also been used as a watchdog by the Diamond Society in South Africa.
