Temperament
The English Bull Terrier is a playful, fearless and determined breed. This strong dog is a tenacious fighter and can be a danger to other dogs if not well trained as a puppy. The English Bull Terrier makes an excellent watchdog and tends to be very protective of the home and family. This breed can be difficult to train and will need firm handling from an early age.  If trained properly the breed is well balanced and sweet natured. The Bull Terrier gets along excellently with children of all ages. They must be given a lot of human company and don't like being left for long periods of time. If they are left they may become destructive. They can’t tolerate teasing and children should be taught to show respect to the breed.  English Bull Terriers are instinctive hunters and should not be left with small fleeing animals such as: hamsters, guinea pigs, rats or rabbits. This breed is not suitable for elderly people as they can be quite boisterous.

Exercise
The English Bull Terrier requires plenty of exercise. A daily walk for around 45 – 120 minutes is recommended. Always keep this breed on the lead in public places and only allow them to run free in a secure location.

Grooming
A regular groom with a firm bristle brush is recommended. English Bull Terriers are usually a low maintenance breed.

Health
The English Bull Terrier is generally of very good health but can be prone to zinc deficiencies. Some white pups are born deaf.

Life Expectancy
10 – 12 years

History
English Bull Terriers were developed in the UK. They were created by crossing Bulldogs with the English Terrier (now extinct). The Bull Terrier was originally bred for dog-fighting. When bull baiting was outlawed in England in the mid 1830’s, dog fighting became popular and  smaller breeds were needed so that they could be easily hidden under a spectators coat if the police were to arrive. It got the reputation as a "canine gladiator" and would often fight to the death.  Some Bull Terrier owners found other uses for the dog including; sheep herding and hunting, as well as vermin control. By selective breeding the English Bull Terrier has today developed into a loyal pet and much loved family companion.
