Temperament
The Briard is gentle, loyal and very intelligent. This glamorous breed has great stamina and endurance. They are easy to train and learn quickly but require a patient owner to train them while they are still a manageable size. The Briard will get along with other dogs and animals if socialised as a puppy. The breed can become bored easily which leads to bad habits. These dogs need to be a part of the family. The Briard is a natural herder and may try to herd small children by bumping them. However, they never bite or nip. This breed is an excellent watch dog and will alert its owner with its low pitched and very loud bark. They should not be left alone with small fleeing animals but can be trusted with children of any age. The Briard is an all round wonderful family pet.

Exercise
The Briard requires vigorous exercise. A twice daily walk/run for around 40 - 60 minutes is sufficient. This breed also loves to run free off the lead but should only be allowed to do so in a secure location. Lack of exercise will lead the Briard to destructive behaviour.

Grooming
A daily groom with a firm bristle brush is recommended. Only bathe this breed when necessary. It does not take long for the Briards coat to become out of control.

Health
The Briard is generally a healthy breed. However, some can be prone to hip dysplasia, PRA and eye problems.  The Briard is not suited to hot climates due to their thick double coat.

Life Expectancy
10 – 12 years

History
The Briard originated in France around 1,000 years ago. This breed has always been known as a shepherd dog and has been herding since its development. The Briard has also been used as a war messenger and a wagon puller during the Second World War. Today, the Briard is mainly used as a family companion and show dog, although some can still be found working on European farms. The breed is recognised by all major worldwide dog clubs.
