The Boston Terrier of the 1800’s is not the dog we know today. It is difficult to believe that these charming little dogs were used as tenacious pit-fighters and for ridding homes and farms of vermin. It is thought the breed was created by crossing the English Bulldog with an English Terrier (now extinct). Other dogs thought to have contributed to this breed are the American Pit Bull Terrier, Boxer and the Bull Terrier. The Boston Terrier was officially the first dog to be registered by the American Kennel Club in 1893. Today, the Boston Terrier is mainly used as a family pet and show dog and is extremely popular in the USA.
