Temperament
The Bloodhound is affectionate, gentle and sensitive. They are truly a good natured companion. This breed is very lively, independent and boisterous when young. Bloodhound puppies need firm but gentle training. They can be difficult to train and owners will need to be patient. Do not expect too much obedience from the Bloodhound as they  are naturally gentle animals but they do have minds of their own and will often make their own decisions rather than listening to their owners orders. Bloodhounds are rarely vicious, although they can be aggressive with dogs of the same sex. They can be protective of their home and family, but will usually welcome everybody - friend or foe. Bloodhounds are able to follow any scent; they are such a sure tracker that they are used worldwide for rescues and criminal searches. The majority of Bloodhounds must not be walked off the lead, as they may flee when they get scent and instinct pushes them to find the end of the trail. Bloodhounds can adapt well to urban living, but rural homes are preferred. This breed has a tendency to snore, howl and drool a fair bit.

Exercise
The Bloodhound requires regular exercise. A twice daily walk for around 40 – 60 minutes is sufficient. It is important to only let the Bloodhound run free in a safe location as it tends to be difficult to get their attention if they pick up a scent.

Grooming
A weekly groom of the Blood Hound with a firm bristle brush is recommended. Only bathe this breed when necessary.

Health
The Bloodhound is generally of good health but can be prone to bloat. This breed can also suffer from hip dysplasia and an extra padded bed is recommended to help avoid calluses on the Bloodhounds joints.

Life Expectancy
10 – 12 years

History
The Bloodhound originated in Belgium during the eighth-century. Bloodhounds are usually black and tan, red or tawny but in the Middle Ages they occurred in other solid colours like white and tri-coloured. This breed is one of many English hounds derived from French stock. The Bloodhound loves to hunt/track rather than killing the tracked animal. It has been used to hunt animals, criminals, lost children and even run-away slaves. Bloodhounds are also known as the Flemish Hound.
