This even tempered little dog is highly intelligent and can learn tricks quickly. The breed is very sweet natured and loyal, they simply love human company. The Bichon Frise is a good watchdog and will warn their owner to any unusual noises or the arrival of strangers. The Bichon Frise will get along well with other dogs and household animals if well socialised as a puppy. This charming breed is also suited to homes with small children. The Bichon Frise adapts well to any situation and apartment style life is ideal. However, they love to explore the outdoors so a garden is preferred. Exercise The Bichon Frise is a playful little dog and although they do not require a lot of exercise they will benefit from a daily walk and play sessions. Only let the Bichon Frise run off the lead in a safe and secure location. Grooming The Bichon Frise will require daily brushing with a firm bristle brush. Bathe or dry shampoo monthly, making sure that the animal is dry and warm afterwards. The eyes need cleaning on a daily basis as they are inclined to weep which stains the face. Health The Bichon Frise is generally a healthy breed. However, some can be prone to eye problems, including cataracts and retinal atrophy. The breed can also suffer from epilepsy and dislocating kneecaps. Life Expectancy 12 – 15 years History The Bichon Frise was developed during the 14th century. The breed is thought to be a cross between the Barbet Water Spaniel and the Poodle and was initially named the "Barbichon”. Because of the breeds happy character they travelled a lot. They were often bartered by Spanish sailors as they moved from continent to continent. In the 1300’s Italian sailors discovered these dogs on their voyages and returned them to the continent, where they became much loved favourites of Italian aristocracy. The Bichon Frise has also been used as an organ grinders dog and also a circus performer. Today, the Bichon Frise is mainly used as a family pet and show dog and is recognised by all major worldwide dog clubs.
