This reliable breed has great stamina and endurance. They are easily trained and are loving companions. The Belgian Shepherd Dog can be reserved towards strangers but will get along with other dogs and animals if socialised as a puppy. Without extensive socialisation as a puppy this breed will become aggressive towards other animals. The Belgian Shepherd Dog is an intelligent breed and can become bored easily which leads to bad habits. These dogs need to be a part of the family. The Belgian Shepherd Dog is a good watch dog and is often used by the military and the police. They tend to become attached to one or two family members. Exercise The Belgian Shepherd Dog requires vigorous exercise. A twice daily walk/run/swim for around 40 - 60 minutes is sufficient. This breed also loves to run free off the lead but should only be allowed to do so in a secure location. Lack of exercise will lead the Belgian Shepherd Dog to destructive behaviour. Grooming Grooming varies between the four different breed types (Groenendael, Malinois, Tervuren and Laekenois). Generally a weekly groom of the Belgian Shepherd Dog with a firm bristle brush is recommended. Only bathe this breed when necessary as they are naturally very clean dogs. Health The Belgian Shepherd Dog is generally a very healthy breed. However, some can be prone to hip dysplasia and eye problems. Life Expectancy 12 – 14 years History The Belgian Shepherd Dog was once used throughout Belgium to guard and herd sheep. There are four different types of Belgian Shepherd Dog; Groenendael, Malinois, Tervuren and the Laekenois. All these breed types are identical in temperament; the coat is the only distinguishing feature. The most popular type of the Belgian Shepherd Dog is the Groenendael. This breed has been used by police and military throughout the world and also as a search and rescue dog. The breed is recognised by all major dog clubs throughout the world.
