General Description: Small muscular dog with a dense, waterproof coat Height: 33 – 41cm Weight: 9 - 11kg Combinations of Black, tan, white, lemon or blue mottle. Hound group Temperament The Beagle is a loyal, alert and good tempered companion. They need firm handling from an experienced owner as they can be strong willed and difficult to train. Beagles are determined and watchful but have minds of their own. It is important beagle owners are the pack leader and that the dog is provided with a good amount of mental and physical stimulation every day. Beagles have a loud baying howl, which was wonderful to hunting horsemen, but can be disturbing for neighbours. Beagles have a tendency to follow their own noses and may run off on their own if let off their lead in an unsecure location. This breed is great with children and rarely aggressive. Exercise The Beagle requires regular physical exercise. A daily walk for around 40 – 50 minutes is sufficient. Grooming The Beagle will require an occasional groom with a firm brush. Health The Beagle can be prone to some eye problems, hip dysplasia and some genetic skin conditions. Also obesity can be a problem for this breed. Life Expectancy 12 – 15 years History The Beagle originated in England and is one of the most popular scent hounds. They were originally used to hunt hares and pheasants by scent. The breed probably originated by crossing English hounds with Harriers. The Beagle has been used in packs and also in pairs for hunting. They have also been used by police as an excellent sniffer dog. Unfortunately, Beagles are often used for medical experimentation in various parts of the world.
