Basset Hounds are a cross between the Bloodhound and the Basset Artesian Normand. Bassets were once used to pursue foxes and badgers to ground. This stocky breed became very popular in France by the 18th century as hunting was very popular among the aristocracy at this time. Basset Hounds were later recognised in the UK and the U.S. during the mid 1900’s. Packs of Bassets are still used for hunting rabbit and hare but are more common as show and family dogs today.
