This happy dog is charming, playful and full of character. The American Hairless Terrier is very brave and makes an excellent watchdog. They can be protective of the home and family and they tend to become attached to only one or two people. The breed can become moody and snappish in adulthood and therefore will get along better with older children. Although this breed is easy to train, they will need firm handling from an early age. They are fine being left alone for up to 4 hours, however, owners should avoid leaving the American Hairless Terrier for long periods as they can become destructive. The American Hairless Terrier is known to sweat alot when hot or scared. Exercise The American Hairless Terrier will get most of the exercise required by running around the garden. However a daily walk for around 20 – 40 minutes is recommended. Grooming The American Hairless Terrier should be bathed once a week. If their skin becomes dry, moisturising lotion should be applied. The nails should be clipped regularly. Health The American Hairless Terrier is generally of very good health but some can be prone to skin allergies due to the lack of hair. The AHT can also suffer from sun damage and should be protected with sun cream before going outside in the sunshine. Life Expectancy 14 - 16 years History The American Hairless Terrier originated in America in 1972 in a litter of Rat Terriers containing a completely hairless female. The dog was bred and eventually produced a litter with two hairless pups, one of each sex. These hairless puppies were the foundation of the breed. This relatively new breed was named the American Hairless Terrier and is recognised throughout the world by most dog clubs.
