They are the smallest member of the gundog group and are an intelligent, friendly, sweet natured breed that loves to run or work. American Cocker Spaniels are lively and obedient. However, some dogs of this breed type may show aggression toward their owners; a condition similar to rage syndrome seen with other breeds like the English Springer Spaniel. The American Cocker Spaniel is a great watchdog and will fit in well to urban living. Exercise American Cocker Spaniels have boundless stamina and require regular physical exercise. A twice daily walk for around 30 – 40 minutes is sufficient. Grooming The American Cocker Spaniel is a high maintenance breed. Daily brushing with a firm bristle brush is required. Health American Cocker Spaniels are prone to ear infections and some skin problems such as seborrhoea. This breed is generally of good health but can experience some eye and spine trouble in later life. Life Expectancy 10 – 12 years History The American Cocker Spaniel originated in the USA. Although this breed is said to have genetic links with the English Cocker Spaniel, the American Cocker Spaniel had become so different by the 1930’s it was recognised in the USA as a separate breed type. It took another 30 years before the UK were to recognise the breed as a separate breed to the ECS.
