Temperament
The Akita is a brave, docile and loyal breed. The Akita needs firm training and lots of socialising when puppies as they can display an aggressive streak if allowed. They are an excellent guard dog. Japanese mothers would often leave their children in the care of the family Akita. The Akita can be very aggressive towards other dogs and animals and should therefore never be allowed to run off its lead around other animals or in an unsecure location. It is not a good idea to tease the Akita, they may bite if provoked. Therefore children must be taught to treat this breed with respect and kindness. The Akita tends to get bored quickly and can become destructive. They do not like to be left alone for long periods of time and are much happier when with their family. They use many interesting sounds to communicate, but they are not excessive barkers. This breed can be very food-possessive and at times wilful.

Exercise
The Akita needs a moderate amount of exercise for physical and mental stimulation. A daily walk for around 40 - 50 minutes will be sufficient.

Grooming
Regular grooming with a firm brush is required. Bathing is mainly unnecessary and will remove the naturally water proof coat.

Health
The Akita is generally a healthy breed, although they can be prone to hip dysplasia and eye trouble.

History
The Akita is the largest in size and weight of all the Japanese breeds. The ancestors of the Akita breed are said to have come to Japan before Japan and the European continent were separated by the Sea of Japan. The breed is native to the island of Honshu in the region of ‘Akita’ in Japan, where it has remained unchanged for centuries. The Akita has been worked as a hunting dog to assist bear and deer hunters and as guard and fighting dogs. In the early 1930’s, the Akita breed was designated as a Japanese Natural Treasure
