Temperament
The
Affenpinscher is a loyal and fearless companion. This entertaining breed is loving and affectionate and although a small dog, they believe themselves to be much larger and are not in any way delicate. Affenpinschers crave affection and tend to attach themselves to one family member as their leader. This breed tends to over eat, so a strict diet is recommended. They will tend to bark at visitors more than the average dog.
Exercise
The Affenpinscher is an energetic and active little dog, so daily walks are recommended to stimulate them both mentally and physically. However, a lot of their exercise needs can be met with indoor play sessions. Affenpinschers are an ideal size for a small house and garden.
Grooming
The Affenpinscher will require an occasional groom with a firm brush.
Health
Affenpinschers have no major health concerns; however, some can be prone to fractures. Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA) is occasionally seen along with open fontanel. Like most short nosed breeds, the Affenpinscher may also suffer from respiratory problems.
Life Expectancy
10 - 12 years
History
The Affenpinscher originated in Germany and is one of the oldest European Toy dogs. This breed has a mischievous monkey-like expression, which has earned them the nickname; 'The Black Devil'. It is said that dogs looking very much like modern day Affenpinschers are seen in many paintings dating back to the 14th Century. 'Affe' is German for ‘monkey’ and 'Pinscher' roughly translates to "terrier". The Affenpinscher is closely related to the smooth
Miniature Pinscher.
