Our Ghanaian unrefined shea butter is a beautiful creamy butter that is made traditionally under fair trade and organic guidelines (our supplier has certified this shea butter with USDA and the Soil Association).
The shea butter is extracted without using hexane or other chemicals, it is not bleached, refined or deodorized. We do not add preservatives, yellow colouring agents (natural or artificial), or other additives to our unrefined shea butter. We bring it to you fresh and in its purest & most natural state which is why our butter has a more beige colour than other butters on the market.
Like all premium unrefined shea butters, it has a characteristic nutty (not unpleasant) scent, which disappears after a few minutes when rubbed on skin.
Unrefined shea butter is a very versatile active ingredient for skin and hair care products, and has excellent anti-aging, soothing and moisturizing properties.

This shea butter has been expeller pressed. Due to its high content of unsaponifiables (up to 17%), shea butter is traditionally used to protect skin against weather, sun and photo-aging and elimination of superficial irritations. Shea butter is well known to assist cutaneous dryness, dermatitis, dermatoses, eczema, solar erythema and burns. Shea butter contains vitamins and other active elements such as cinnamic acid, which can help protect the skin from UV rays as well as having healing properties. It also contains 5-10% phytosterols, which help to stimulate cellular regeneration and growth. It is highly moisturising and protective having mild anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
The toxitity of shea butter is nil - it is used in Europe in foods and confections to replace fats to enhance food texture and flavour.
Store in a cool and dark place and in an air tight container (if not used permanently) and use within 12 months.
This butter is produced in a deeply rural village in Ghana. Impurities are part of unrefined shea butters and can be dealt with by filtering the butter or passing it through a cheese cloth before using it in creams, lotions and soaps for example.
Please note that this is a completely natural product produced from wild grown tree nuts. Colour variations are down to the harvest and range from a creamy yellow to a dark beige. The aroma of shea butter also depends on the harvest and is sometimes more nutty than others.
